Solo road trips are empowering and exhilarating, especially if your current season of life is defined by change and uncertainty. As a seasoned solo traveler with over seven years of road tripping experience, I’m sharing my top must-know road trip safety tips for solo female travelers. These practical strategies will help you travel with confidence, ensuring that your journey is filled with freedom and wonder.

Spoiler - you can find these tips (and more!) in my FREE Super Simple Guide to Solo Road Trip Safety.  Grab it ➑️ HERE

πŸ“Let's get to the tips!πŸ“

1. Always Have a Backup Plan

When traveling solo, preparation is your superpower. Creating backup plans helps you stay calm and confident, no matter what the road throws your way.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Print out essential documents, including reservations, emergency contact numbers, health information, and banking details.
  • Carry printed maps in case your GPS fails.
  • Consider alternate routes and have a plan for emergencies like losing your phone or keys.

In my #1 bestselling book, There’s Wonder Around the Bend, I share detailed strategies for handling emergencies, including a guide to managing without your smartphone. These small steps offer big peace of mind, ensuring you’re ready for anything.  You can grab it β© here and read more about it at the end of this post.

2. Secure Your Essentials Strategically

Keeping your valuables safe is crucial as a solo female traveler. Use a layered approach to protect your items:

  • Keep your ID, registration, phone, credit cards, and a small amount of cash easily accessible.
  • Stash an extra car key and emergency cash in a hidden but accessible spot.
  • Make digital and physical backups of important documents.

In the safety chapter in my book I cover this in much more detail, because some items you need easy and constant access to, some are for emergencies only, and yet others are for your eyes only and need to be kept out of plain sight.

These safety tips are part of a strategy to ensure you’re prepared, and it also helps you stay organized as you travel solo.

3. Use Technology Wisely

Technology is a powerful tool, but it must be used wisely.

  • Set up emergency contacts and activate location sharing with someone you trust.
  • Avoid posting your real-time location on social media—wait until you’ve moved on to share photos.
  • Protect your phone and any sensitive information with strong passwords.
